Early Days

Abacus as a local Primary School - 1959

Abacus was first built as a local Primary school in 1959 with land donated by the village. The school was called Hang Hau District Public School and served the 18 nearby villages in Clearwater Bay. The school catered for children from grades 1-6 in 3 classrooms. Sometimes there were 30-40 children in a class and sometimes only 10 depending on the year and how many children enrolled. The school had no bathrooms at this time and children had to run home if they needed the bathroom during the school day. Over time, many children went to study at the larger, newer Primary schools, resulting in falling numbers. The school moved from full day to half-day and eventually by the time it closed in 1989 it had only 5 pupils left.
